Supplements For Increasing Testosterone

Supplements For Increasing Testosterone

There are a number of natural herbs and dietary supplements which have been shown to increase and restore normal serum levels of the hormone Testosterone.

Some of the herbs and supplements with the strongest evidence include Fenugreek extract, Tongkat Ali, Shilajit, Ashwagandha Root and many others.

In this article we are going to take a look at some of the best supplements for increasing Testosterone.

1. Fenugreek Extract

Fenugreek Extract TestosteroneFenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seed extracts have been shown to possess androgenic and anabolic effects in males.

A meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials evaluated the effect of fenugreek extract on total testosterone levels in male.

The meta-analysis concluded:

Fenugreek extract has a significant effect on total serum testosterone.

Results from clinical trials suggest that fenugreek extract supplement has an effect on serum total testosterone levels in male. [1]

Fenugreek seed extracts enriched to approximately 20% Protodioscin content such Furosap (FS) have been found to boost free and total testosterone in humans. [2]

Another double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial published 2016 examined the effect of Testofen, a specialised Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract on the symptoms of possible androgen deficiency, sexual function and serum androgen concentrations in healthy aging males.

The study concluded:

Trigonella foenum-graecum seed extract is a safe and effective treatment for reducing symptoms of possible androgen deficiency, improves sexual function and increases serum testosterone in healthy middle-aged and older men. [3]

2. Tongkat Ali (Malaysian Ginseng)

The Evidence-Based Health Benefits Of Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) aka “Malaysian Ginseng”

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) also known as “Long Jack” and “Malaysian Ginseng” has been reported to increase Testosterone levels and has a long history of being used as a tonic herb for treating male sexual disorders such as erectile dysfunction.

The phytoandrogenic properties of Tongkat Ali and its ability to boost Testosterone levels have reported numerous times in the literature.

Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali; TA) is natural alternative to TRT and has been shown to restore serum testosterone levels, thus significantly improving sexual health. [4]

Another study published in 2012 featuring 76 of 320 patients suffering from late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) were given 200 mg of a standardised water-soluble extract of Tongkat ali for 1 month.

The study found that Tongkat ali extract significantly improved the serum testosterone concentration.

While before treatment only 10.5% of the patients did not show any complaint according to the AMS scale and 35.5% had normal testosterone levels, after the completed treatment 71.7% and 90.8% of the patients showed normal values, respectively.

Thus, Tongkat ali extract appears to be useful as a supplement in overcoming the symptoms of LOH and for the management of hypogonadism. [5]

3. Shilajit

Purified Shilajit is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a Rasayana’ (Rejuvenator) and research has found to increase free testosterone, total testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone by 19–31% in healthy men.

Shilajit is a rock exudate found in the sedimentary rocks of Himalayan, Altai, and other mountain ranges.

It contains fulvic acids as the main components along with free and conjugated dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs; Urolithins) and more than 40 minerals.[6]

Treatment with Shilajit for consecutive 90 days revealed that it has significantly (P < 0.05) increased total testosterone, free testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) compared with placebo. [7]

The popular Ayurvedic herb Ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera) has shown in some studies to increase salivary levels of Testosterone.

Ashwagandha also known as “Indian Ginseng” is an adaptogen herb, which are non-toxic substances that increase the bodies resistance to stress and promote/restore normal physiological functioning or optimal homeostasis.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study published 2019 examined the hormonal and vitality effects of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) in aging, overweight males over an 8 week period.

Ashwagandha intake was associated with an 18% greater increase in DHEA-S and 14.7% greater increase in testosterone compared to the placebo. [9]
