Evidence-Based Health Review

It had been some time since I had decided to visit my local Holland and Barrett store to see what healthy snacks they had on offer.

I stumbled upon Human Food’s Smart Food Organic Plant Based bars and decided I would pick up a few flavours to review here at Evidence-Based Health.

The ingredients of Human Food’s Organic Plant Based Bars immediately caught my eye containing numerous healthy goodies.

Some of the stand out nutritional benefits and superfoods including 500mg of the adaptogens Organic Maca Root and 200mg Organic Siberian Ginseng, 800mg Omega-3 content, 100% of the RI for Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, 7g of dietary fiber and much more.

Another thing that really appealed to me is that the ingredients are all completely based around organic, plant-based vegan foods such as fruits, seeds and plant extracts.

So all very healthy and containing some of my favorite plant-foods all in the one bar.

Taste & Flavour:

The Human Food Orange & Acerola Bar has a really nice soft crumbly texture, with some crunch from the seeds they contain (organic hemp, pumpkin and sunflower seeds)

Nice mild zesty citrus cacao flavour due to the inclusion of the orange oil for natural flavouring.

Great taste overall, especially for how healthy the ingredients all are and makes for a satisfying delicious snack.

Nutrition:

I’ve snacked on quite a few of Human Food’s nutrition bars since and I find them a very filling snack for the size and they keep you going for hours.

They make for a great healthy nutritive snack for when you are out and about on the go, especially as they contain two great adaptogen herbs for supporting energy and stress levels in organic maca root and Siberian ginseng.

They contain a generous amount of fiber at 7 grams per bar for digestive health support and also 14 grams of plant-based protein.

From a micro-nutrient perspective the Human Food Orange & Acerola bar is packed full of good nutrition including 100% of the RI of natural Vitamin C from the likes of organic Acerola cherry, 100% RI for Vitamin B12 for supporting a healthy nervous system and cardiovascular health especially for plant-based dieters and vegans.

The bar also boasts 50% of the RI for Vitamins D, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and minerals such as Magnesium, Calcium, Copper, Iron and Manganese.

So all in all some pretty impressive nutrition considering its all derived from natural plant-foods and not fortified with cheap synthetic nutrients as most bars tend to utilize.

Another stand out nutritional benefit is the pretty decent Omega-3 content at 800mg per bar, which is great for supporting cardiovascular health.

Human Food’s nutrition bars also contain many other healthy goodies including Organic Sprout Extract, Organic Mushroom Extract, Algae Extract, Organic Cacao, Organic Curry Leaf Extract, Organic Quinoa Sprout Extract and Organic Black Pepper.

Overall:

I really enjoyed Human Food’s Orange & Acerola Bar and as said have been back for several since writing the review.

Packed full of healthy nutrition, they are a great choice of snack for convenience when out and about on the go.

They are slightly expensive at £3.50 per bar, however the quality of the ingredients edges it here that makes the price worthwhile.

When you take into context that you can easily pay £2.50 for a sugar laden, chocolate protein bar or cookie these days that doesn’t provide half the healthy nutrition from the organic plant-foods that the Human Food bars contain.

I think if they could bring the price down to around £3.00 per bar it would entice me to buy them more often.

Although with that being said, Holland and Barrett were running a Buy One & Get One Half Price Deal at the time, so I took full advantage of that to make a saving.

Would definitely recommend the Human Food bars to our readers who are interested in healthy organic, plant-based snacks that are packed full of nutrients and whole-foods.
